How to Set Up a Gateway
Page on Yahoo!GeoCities
1. Go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/
2. Click on the Sign up now! link under "Free Web Site".
3. Sign up for your Yahoo! ID is the next screen. Choose a Yahoo ID. I suggest that you use the name of your mall.
4. Choose a password that you will remember.
5. Complete the rest of the page and then click the button that says "Submit This Form".
6. Then the Sign up for your Home Page comes up.
7. Under Choose a Topic, select one that is different from your website like "Issues & Causes" or "Celebrities".
8. Then type in the Security Code and click on "Submit This Form".
9. The next page is a welcome page with your login, email address and URL for your website.
10. Then click on "Build your page now!".
11. The next page is "Build Your Own Web Site". Click on Yahoo!
PageBuilder.
12. The easy way to design your page is to select a PageBuilder Template.
Use the Techie template. DO NOT click on "Launch PageBuilder".
Go to the middle of the page and click the "Techie" template.
13. PageBuilder will load in a new window and several other windows will
open with clocks and houses and weird stuff. After it loads, maximize the page to see it better.
If it doesn't load in about 5 minutes then something is wrong. Close all
the screens and start over. If it still doesn't load after several
tries, go back to it later and try it again. If it still doesn't load
after several tries, send me an email. You may be one of the few whose
operating system doesn't work with the Yahoo PageBuilder. I will suggest
another free webpage builder for you.
14. Once the PageBuilder loads, click on the File menu. Select Save As
and enter the name of your keyword (if you don't have a keyword yet,
type in "test page" without the quotes). Then click OK.
15. Find where the text on the page says "ABOUT ME", double click
on the text and delete it. Type in your keyword using upper and lower
case letters. Never use all capital letters.
Note: If you don't have a
picture to upload yet, skip #16 - #22 below and continue. When you have
a picture to upload, follow these steps.
16. Find the photo and double click on it. The Select a Picture menu pops up.
Where it says "Upload Your Own Picture", click the "Upload" button. Use
this only if you have a picture to upload.
17. Click Browse and find the picture you want on your hard drive. Then click Open. Then click Upload.
18. On the Select Picture menu go to the down arrow next to The "Collection:" box and click it. Select Imported Pictures and click on it.
19. Select the name of your picture from the Picture List and click on it. Then click OK. Your picture will be in the box in place of the other one.
20. In the box next to Web URL, paste in the link to your mall store. In the Screen Tip box, type in your keyword.
For copying, hold down the control key (CTRL) and hit the letter C. For
paste, hold down the CTRL key and hit the letter V. So, CTRL +C for copy
and CTRL +V for paste.
21. To resize the picture evenly, grab the lower right corner and move it up or down as needed.
22. In the box in the right column, type in your text that uses your
keyword and a final sentence that says, "To buy the 'keyword' or other accessories, click below:"
To add your text, look to see if there is a box with text to the right of the
picture. If so, click in the box that holds the text, delete the text and type
in the text you want on the page. If there is no text to the right of
the picture, go to the button bar and click on the Text icon. A new
text box will open. Type in the text you want in that block. Move the
text box where you want it. Remember, the text you want is not automatically on the page.
You have to put it there.
23. Make the boxes the size you want by clicking on them and moving the little squares at the edge.
To move a text box put the cursor on the box and move it around until a
little cross with arrows pointing in all 4 directions appears. Hold down
the left mouse button and drag the box to where you want it.
24. To delete a text box, select it and click your Delete Key. While you
are deleting, delete all the references and links to Yahoo and the Not
Online button at the bottom of the page. Don't put your personal name
and email on the page either. Just delete those lines as well.
25. To change the background picture, double click on the box in the lower left hand corner. Select a background.
26. To add a link to your EzStopMall, double click on the box where you want it. Type in the keyword and highlight or select it. Then click on the menu item at the top of the screen that says Link and pictures a link in a chain. The Hot Link menu box appears. Type in the link or paste it from NotePad or wherever you saved it. Click OK.
If a box is not there on the page, click on the Text icon, move the box
where you want it and type in the text. For copying, hold down the
control key (CTRL) and hit the letter C. For paste, hold down the CTRL
key and hit the letter V. So, CTRL +C for copy and CTRL +V for paste.
27. Move boxes around to where you want them and size them. Change the text color and size.
28. If you haven't saved this page before as your keyword, click on File and Save As. The Save As and Publish Page box comes up. Change the page name to your keyword.
If you have saved it as your keyword, click File and then Save. Next, a screen will come up showing the URL of your new gateway page. It will be similar to the following:
http://www.geocities.com/YourMallName/keyword.html.
Yahoo will the ask if you want to view the page - say yes. A new window
will pop up. Copy the URL in the Address bar and paste it into an email
to your coach. To resume work on your page, close this new window and
you are back on PageBuilder.
Note:
Never use the Page Preview option. It add code to your page and messes
up the page in other ways. Do not use it or your page may never publish
correctly if it publishes at all.
29. To exit PageBuilder, click File and Exit. Then close all the other windows.
30. Your page is complete.
When you want to return
to PageBuilder, here are the steps:
1. Go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/
2. Where it says "Sign in to Yahoo!", enter your Yahoo! ID
and then your Password. Then click "Sign in". If you asked
Yahoo to save your password and Yahoo ID, you will not need to sign in.
At the top of the page it will say, "Welcome: CoachPaul" or
your Yahoo! ID.
3. The next page is "Build Your Own Web Site". Click on Yahoo!
PageBuilder.
4. On the next screen click on the button labeled "Launch
PageBuilder5. If it does not load in 5 minutes, close all the windows
except for the "Yahoo! PageBuilder" screen and click
"Launch PageBuilder" again.
6. To exit PageBuilder or to move to another webpage, click File and the
Save. Then click on Open, New Page or New Page from Template.
Advanced Yahoo!GeoCities
Features:
Here are some ways to add keywords to your pages. Most are behind the scenes and will not be seen by the visitor but will be seen by the search engines.
1. Once you put your graphic on your page, double click on it and the Select Picture menu appears. Don't put anything in the box labeled mouse-over-picture. Under Screen Tip, type in your keyword. Then just click OK.
2. In addition, click on Format and then on Page Properties. Type in your keyword into each of the three boxes. The three boxes are titled: Page Title, Keywords and Author. You can also paste it in so you won't mistype. You can indeed use copy and paste on Yahoo, but you need to use the keyboard shortcuts. For copying, hold down the control key (CTRL) and hit the letter C. For paste, hold down the CTRL key and hit the letter V. So, CTRL +C for
copy and CTRL +V for paste.
