Tutorial
Copy and Paste  or Cut and Paste

You may not know much about using your computer, but this is a skill
that you really need to master. It will help save time and make
sure words and links are not typed incorrectly.

There are three basic ways to copy and paste or cut and paste, but this is the easiest for beginners.

First let's learn to copy and paste.

1.  Put your mouse pointer in front of the first word of the text you want to copy or to the left of a picture you want to copy. The pointer will turn into something that looks like an " I ". Click the left mouse button and hold it down as you drag your mouse over the text you wish to copy. The block of text will change color as you drag your mouse. You can select some or all of the text. Lets try it in the box below:

2. After the text is selected or highlighted, place your cursor over the selected section.

3. Right mouse click once.

4. A menu will pop up. Select Copy.

5. Move to the place or document where you want to put the text. Why don't we use the box below to paste the text that you just copied.

6. Put your cursor where you want to put the text or image. Click your left mouse button once. The curser should be blinking on the page.

7. Click your right mouse button once.

8. A menu will pop up. Select Paste. The copied text or picture will appear. (In this example, text will appear.)

If you had problems, keep trying until you get it right.

Let's now learn to cut and paste.

The difference between copy and paste or cut and paste is that when you cut the text is removed (or cut out). The text can still be pasted but it is gone from the original text.

1. Put your mouse pointer in front of the first word of the text you want to copy or to the left of a picture you want to copy. The pointer will turn into something that looks like an " I " if you are cutting text. Click the left mouse button and hold it down as you drag your mouse over the text you wish to cut. The block of text will change color as you drag your mouse. You can select some or all of the text. Lets try it in the box below

2. After the text is selected or highlighted, place your cursor over the selected section.

3. Right mouse click once.

4. A menu will pop up. Select Cut.

5. Move to the place or document where you want to put the text. Why don't we use the box below to paste the text that you just cut.

6. Put your cursor where you want to put the text or image. Click your left mouse button once. The curser should be blinking on the page.

7. Click your right mouse button once.

8. A menu will pop up. Select Paste. The cut text or picture will appear. (In this example, text will appear.)

Was this tutorial helpful? Keep working at it until you are comfortable doing it. Personally, I prefer to just copy and paste. If I get side-tracked during the process I won't lose valuable text or information by forgetting to paste it where is needs to go. If I lose it, I have to retype it or go find the information again.

That's it. Good luck and happy cut, copy and pasting.
